Prisoner Reentry, Recidivism and the FOCUS Reentry Mentoring Program


The above diagram is a graphic representation of the structure and activities of the FOCUS Reentry program. It illustrates the uniqueness of FOCUS while highlighting one of its most important components—developing positive social capital. “Social capital” is the expected benefit derived from preferential treatment that is the result of positive social connections and networks. For example, most individuals utilize their networks to be informed of jobs, opportunities in the community, housing, etc, however the networks that offenders are familiar with commonly do not produce these benefits. Through interaction with the mentor, offenders are introduced to new pathways to positive social capital.
